Hyde Mill, Pattrieouoex's, or Senior Service...... the mill centre of this shot is soon to be demolished. Originally a cotton mill construction completed in 1905. The Cotton mill closed in 1958 and was sold to J. A. Pattrieouoex, makers of Senior Service cigarettes. The Gallaher group purchased the building in 1959 and the mill continued as a cigarette factory for over 40 years. Gallahers closed in 1999 and production was moved to Northern Ireland. The building as been the home of Findel Education, a supplier of educational products for a while now. They have built a new office block in the grounds and the rest of this mill is making way for housing. Last Friday the firm was giving away pens paper and such like as the building was cleared ready for demolation. I'll be sad to see it go... as many will be, and I worry about all the homes being built there.... more strain on our doctors, schools, dentists.... and everything else a mass of housing needs. I'm sure I'll be showing more from this mill as it is taken down.

All this industry demolished and all for new homes. Whilst it shows that Hyde must rank as a good place to live in the loss of history is very disturbing.

Hi Deslilas - Senior Service is a reference to the British Navy!

How sad to loose this fabulous building, I wonder if they considered a conversion. I guess so but who knows. Great photo Tom, thanks for sharing it and the story.

My mum and gran used to work there, and I remember as a kid occasionaly going in with my mum if she went to meet someone, as well as the christmas parties. That place has alot of personal memories and has become a symbol of Hyde. I for one will be sad to see it leave, however the housing plans have been put on hold, so perhaps something more useful for the community will be built
