Goldfinch

This youngster is just showing it's colouring, the marking and colouring are just about there. The give away about it's age is the beak, it will soon loose the dark patches and have a translucent pink beak with a small tip of black. I'm lucky enough to have Goldfinch visit the garden for the last 2 years.

He is a fluffy little bird! We some goldfinches around too, but they have not been visiting our feeder as much this year as in the past. When I stopped at a pet store today for some stuff for our cats, I saw a variety of finches for sale - $60 for a "singing finch".

Hello and welcome to Wiggers World Alam..
These are loverly birds, and are like most British protected.

Hi Lew..
One seed to try if you can get them is 'Nigar' small black seeds... Goldfinches love them.

You mentioned singing finches... I was wondering if they were Canaries... we have those as well in our pet shops... plus many others. At one time Goldfinches were trapped to be kept as cage bird and cross bred with canaries.

If you keep on taking pictures like these, I will have to start bowing down when I come over here. These are not only good photos, but probably better than mine.

Speaking of canaries...

My mom raised them from the natural mating thing to watching the eggs hatch. The house was full of song. This was during World War II. She loved the birds she raised and then somewhere along the way must have forgotten all about them as she never had them again after she remarried, Bill. William. Bill Rhodehamel. Maybe he sang more than birds do.
